Story/Concept: (5/10) Not for me is one way to say this, not a big fan of vampires but still gave it a try based on recommendation but the supernatural/horror story in this book just wasn’t engaging to me or I think to any new reader jumping on the book during this current story arc.
Writing:(5/10) I was under whelmed by the writing in this book. From the start of the issue it just seemed muffled and the writer didn’t do a good job in bridging the gap in story for new readers. On a positive note I liked the characterization of Vampirella and wish more time was focus on a more definitive narrative of what she was going through and more of what lead her to the point we where seeing her in the issue.
Art: (5/10) Even more frustrating than the writing was the artwork. It was wildly inconsistent from page to page through out the issue and just threw any rhythm you would have as a reader off with the jarring changes. You go from some good clean artwork one page to some dark sketchy unrecognizable mess on another the book is credited with two different artist and I think that has a lot to do with the glaring changes from page to page since there styles don’t exactly match up. Other books have done a good job in the past using two artist on the same title by using the contrasting styles to help tell the story by using one style to tell a flash back and the other for the present time. But here that wasn’t the case and for me it really hurt the book or at least my enjoyment of it.
Cover: (7/10) one of the best parts of this issue was the cover done by Sean Chen with Vampirella in all her glory in an iconic stance.
Overall: (6/10) Overall not the best first issue experience I have had with a new book I have tired but that is why we try new books, to find out what we like and don’t like.
Bottom Line: Unless you’re a huge fan of Vampirella, vampires, or horror this might not be the book for you.
