Story/Concept: (8/10) Building right out of the events of X-Men: Schism we find Wolverine over his head as he struggles to open the Jean Grey School For Higher Learning.
Writing: (8.5/10) Not quite the approach I was expecting at first from Aaron at first but I have to admit it is my fault since until Schism the only book I had read from him had been Scalped. But this shows how truly talented he is as a writer that he can switch gears so drastically and still produce quality work. I like this approach he is taking making Logan more responsible and having him question the choice he made at the end of Schism.
That weight and consequences of actions is what is endearing me to Jason Aaron as a writer the fact that you don’t always need sweeping over the top situations to mark change in a character but subtle choices over time can dictate changes more monumental change within a person and there approach on life. That is a more realistic perspective and characterization that honestly are missing from most superhero comics today and I’m glad he is brave enough to take the risk because it is paying off for us as readers.
With all that being said this was a fun ride, and really took me back to the old X-Men comics I read as a kid in the 80’s! When the X-Men seemed more like a family and less than an army as they have in more recent times. I’m glad also that we see Aaron utilizing threads from Schism like the new Hellfire Club they will make an interesting nemesis for Wolverine’s X-Men going forward.
Art: (9/10) What this book made me realize at this point after all these years and that is Chris Bachalo has become an seminal X-Men artist. He has done such great work on many X-Books over the years and for some reason his art just perfectly fits here. It is not much more I can say about Bachalo’s style there is none other out that comes close to the way he draws out there. The complexity in details such as large landscapes such as the school down to minor ones like slight character touches he put a lot of love into his craft.
Cover: (8/10) Classic cool superhero team cover and I love it!
Overall: (8/10) Great jumping on point for anyone that might be interested in what is new with the X-Men.
Bottom Line: Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo do I really need to say more? Ok I will it is good and pick this one up!
